Use Caution to Protect Your Home

In about the time it takes to read this sentence, someone can burglarize your home. No home is absolutely burglarproof, but there are measures you can take to make your home less attractive to burglars.

Begin by performing a security check of your property:

Examine shrubs and bushes near doors and windows. If they are high and overgrown they can provide as much privacy for burglars as for you. Trim shrubs regularly so that burglars cannot camouflage their activities.
Check your exterior doors. Are they solid-core or metal, or weaker hollow doors? A burglar can kick in a weaker door. Also, check the locks to ensure they are good-quality deadbolts. Locks that can be turned with a bent wire are useless.
Make sure all windows have some kind of anti-slide lock, especially if they are located near ground level.
Keep the garage door closed and locked. Also ensure that any ladders in the garage are inaccessible to burglars.
Make sure you have adequate yard lighting. Install motion detector lights to cover areas of possible entry.
Remove any large, decorative signs that have your family name on them. They are very nice but are an invitation to burglars to look up your phone number to see if you are home. A burglar with a car or cell phone and a phone book can even park in front of your home and call.
Keep large amounts of cash and jewelry in a safety deposit box at a bank. If you hide these in your home you must be very innovative. Professional burglars are good at their trade; whatever hiding spot you think of, they will think of, too.
Engrave all your valuables with your social insurance number or other coding method. This makes it hard for thieves to sell the goods and easier for police to find them. When you leave your home for even short periods of time, be sure to take the following precautions:
Lock all windows and doors.
Use an answering device for your telephone; never reveal your name, whereabouts or any other personal information.
Close drapes or blinds.
Leave on a number of lights as well as a radio or television – all on timers – so they turn on and off at appropriate times.
Never leave a note on the door or in the mailbox. When you leave for more than a day or for extended periods of time, take additional precautions:
Have trusted friend or neighbour pick up the mail and any advertising left at the door, and have them put out a little trash for you on garbage day.
Arrange for someone to mow your lawn, water your plants or shovel your driveway and sidewalk. An unkempt lawn or fresh, undisturbed snow on your sidewalk or doorway is a sure sign that no one is home.
Have small signs stuck to windows or doors with warning such as “high voltage on entry” or “area patrolled by guard dogs”. These signs don’t have to be true; the idea is to confuse the burglar and make him or her reconsider about entering your home.

Alarm systems
An alarm system adds an extra measure of security to your home. There are many type of burglar alarms on the market. The best and most expensive are the hard-wired ones which are professionally installed and monitored. Wireless systems which are professionally monitored by a security company can protect the doors and windows as well as the interior of the home.

While an alarm system may not always prevent a burglar from entering your home, it will minimize the amount of damage and theft that occurs since the intruder will usually flee when the system’s alarm goes off.

Decorative Wall Painting Technique

Using stencils to trace beautiful paintings to adorn walls of houses dates back to the Egyptian civilization. Through out history there are various references to the use of decorative stencil patterns used to embellish walls of palaces and of the local people. It is also a folk art that has been used by the common man for generations. Stenciling involves repeating a simple pattern or using complex patterns in various colors either to tell a story or to decorate walls and furniture. You can use this type of decorative painting to adorn the walls of your house too. Just follow the instructions given below.
 
1. Prepare wall by removing nails and repairing cracks. Use primer if needed.
2. Use painter’s tape-to-tape edges, window and doorframes.
3. Remove all light fixtures and cover all furniture with old sheets.
4. Choose a base color that is neutral like eggshell and apply it evenly.
5. Use clear acetate and oiled stencil cards to cut out stencils in patterns you like. For acetate use a rapidgraph to trace the image. For oiled stencil paper use carbon paper and a sharp pencil to trace image.
6. Use a sharp knife or blade to make clean cuts in the stencil.
7. Use stencil brushes for fine and complicated designs and for patterns that are from folk art it is better to use a sponge. It can be natural marine or synthetic.
8. Artistic acrylic paints are best for stenciling, it can be easily applied and dries rapidly. Oil paints can also be used but this takes longer to dry. Household latex paint can be used though it is a little thick for intricate stencil patterns.
9. For durability apply a final coat of protective varnish.
10. Place all the colors you are using on a palette. Take a dry brush and dab some paint on it, remove excess paint from brush by shaking it on to newspaper.
11. Attach stencil pattern to wall by either spraying a layer of adhesive onto the back of the pattern or by sticking it in place using tape.
12. Now begin painting from the center outward to prevent bleeding of color. You can use more than one color for a pattern.
13. For stencils on walls and furniture apply a last coat of clear protective varnish to ensure that it is durable over time.
14. Clean with warm soapy water.

Finishing drywall

Finishing drywall refers to taping and filling the seams between adjacent sheets. It’s a 3-coat process. Allow each coat to dry overnight. The 1st coat, or bedding, is about 6″ wide and holds a strip of paper or fiberglass tape over the seams. The joint tape helps prevent cracks. Inside corners, including those at the ceiling, are reinforced with the same tape you use on seams between sheets. Outside corners, because of the beating they get, are reinforced with a metal right angle called a bead. The 2nd coat is about 8″ wide and fills the imperfections of the 1st coat. The third is the smooth finish coat, about 12 inches wide. The finish coat is either sanded or smoothed with a damp sponge. Use the sponge if you can. If you sand make sure you wear a dust mask.

1. COVER SCREWS/NAILS WITH JOINT COMPOUND
Cover screw or nailheads with joint compound, troweling it on with a 6-inch drywall knife. Add enough compound to fill the dimple left by the screw, and level the compound with the knife. If a screw missed the stud, it will eventually work its way out; so take it out now and fill the hole.

2. PUT DRYWALL COMPOUND ON 6-INCH KNIFE
Starting at the top of the wall, rest one end of the blade on the raised part of the corner bead and the other end on one of the walls. Draw the knife along the wall toward the floor, applying compound to the corner. Repeat on the second wall.

3. FILL THE TROUGH WITH JOINT COMPOUND
Working with the 6-inch knife, fill the trough created by the bevels with joint compound. Pull the knife along the trough to create a smooth, continuous bed of compound.

4. COVER SEAM WITH A PIECE OF TAPE
Once the compound is in place, cover the seam with a single piece of tape. (Multiple pieces are likely to slip and wrinkle when you embed the tape.) Push the tape into the compound every foot or so to hold it in place while you work.

5. EMBED TAPE AND SMOOTH COMPOUND
Starting in the center of the wall, hold the 6-inch knife so that it bridges the tape and is at a slight angle to the seam. Draw it along the wall, applying enough pressure to embed the tape and also remove excess joint compound. Leave just enough compound under the tape edges to hold them in place—about 1/32 inch. When you reach the corner, go back to the middle of the wall, and work toward the other corner.

6. APPLY THIN LAYER OF JOINT COMPOUND
Apply a thin layer of joint compound to both sides of the inside corner with the 6-inch knife.

7. FOLD DRYWALL PAPER
Fold a strip of drywall paper tape in half by pinching the strip and pulling it between your thumb and forefinger. Position the end of the folded tape strip at the top of the corner joint. Press the tape into the wet compound about 12 inches.

8. USE KNIFE TO SMOOTH TAPE
Start at the top of the room and draw the knife along one of the walls, smoothing the tape. Repeat on the other wall. Move the knife a couple of inches away from the corner and pull from ceiling to floor, removing the excess compound left by the first pass.

9. APPLY SECOND COAT OF COMPOUND
Let the first coat dry thoroughly. Apply a second coat of compound over the screws. Coat the outside corners and seams as before, using an 8-inch knife. Feather the edges so that they are about 2 inches wider than those of the first coat. Feather the edges of any butt seams so that they are about 4 inches beyond those of the first coat.

10. FINISH THE INSIDE CORNERS
At this point, finish the inside corners one wall at a time. Apply a coat of compound on one wall, feathering it out 2 inches beyond the first coat. Let the compound dry, then repeat on the second wall.

11. SMOOTH OUT DRY FINAL COAT
Once the final coat has dried, smooth out any irregularities with a damp sponge. This works just as well as sanding— without creating dust.

12. USE POLE SANDER FOR HIGH CEILINGS
Ceilings and some high areas may be easier to reach with a pole sander. Put 200-grit sanding mesh on the pad and run it back and forth along the seams. Sanding mesh is a piece of screen coated with abrasives; it won’t clog when you sand with it.

Basement Flooring

Basement flooring is an important component of a finished basement. When deciding upon the appropriate basement flooring for your basement remodeling project, it is extremely important that you first determine whether or not you have a moisture barrier underneath the basement floor. If you do not have a moisture barrier underneath the concrete slab then you will have high moisture levels that will wick through the concrete floor to the basement flooring.

To check if you have a moisture barrier underneath your basement’s floor, cut open a few plastic trash bags and lay them in a few different places on the basement floor. Spread them out on the basement floor and tape them down. After a couple of days remove the plastic trash bags from the basement floor and observe if they are wet on the bottom side. If they are, chances are there is no moisture barrier underneath the basement concrete slab. If this is the case, your basement flooring choices are more limited.

It is possible, however, to increase your basement flooring choices by applying a basement waterproofing sealer to the basement floor and to the walls. You can also have a French drain installed around the basement foundation; however this is an expensive endeavor as it will require excavation, gravel and PVC pipes to be installed.

If it is determined that you do have a moisture barrier underneath the basement concrete slab then there are a number of flooring choices to choose from.

Basement Flooring – Carpeting

Though not the ideal basement flooring, carpeting is frequently used in basement remodeling projects. Berber carpeting seems to be quite popular today due to its durability and comfort. Carpeting can be installed even in cases where it has been determined that a moisture barrier was not installed below the concrete slab. A cellulose underlayment can be installed on the concrete floor, prior to installing the carpet padding and carpet to provide a moisture barrier.

Carpeting is great for absorbing sounds that are typically found in a basement, such as furnaces turning on and off, and water running down drain pipes.

Basement Flooring – Free Floating Engineered Flooring

Engineered flooring is ideal for basements, as it floats on top of a foam underlayment that is first placed on the basement floor. The foam underlayment helps to mitigate unevenness in the basement floor and also helps to reduce sound. The engineered flooring floats on this underlayment and can effectively breathe with changes in the basement’s moisture levels.

Engineered flooring is also ideal for basement flooring due to its construction. It is constructed of several layers of wood materials, which helps to stabilize the flooring from warping or twisting. The top layer is usually an attractive wood veneer finish that really gives the look of a solid hardwood floor, but without the concerns of damage due to high moisture levels.

Basement Flooring – Laminate Flooring

Like engineered flooring, laminate floats on an underlayment. Laminate floors have a wood based core and a photographic resin layer based surface that resembles a hardwood floor or vinyl floor look. Laminate floorings need to be installed in dry basements with low moisture levels, as it is possible for laminate floors to delaminate if they come in contact with water.

Laminate and engineered flooring are both designed to be installed by the do it yourself homeowner.

Basement Flooring – Ceramic Tile Floors

Ceramic tile floors are also another excellent choice for basement flooring, however they can be cold on the feet. It is also important that there are no moisture issues with the basement as this could negatively impact the life of the ceramic tile. In addition, it is important that the basement floor is level prior to installing the ceramic floor tile. A leveling grout or mortar may need to be applied on the basement floor before installing the ceramic floor tiles. Also, it is imperative that any basement floor cracks be filled in and sealed as ceramic floor tile has a tendency to crack along basement floor cracks otherwise.

Painting Basement Floors

An inexpensive alternative is to apply a couple of coats of paint to the floor. This is typically acceptable in a low-end basement remodeling project, and it may be the only sensible thing to do if there are concerns of high moisture levels or if there is the threat of the occasional flood.

You can fancy it up a little bit by adding two color tones and or creating interesting patterns.

Basement Flooring – Hardwood Flooring

Hardwood flooring should not be considered as a basement flooring material. It is very susceptible to high moisture levels and can not come in contact with water. If it does, the wood will warp and quickly become ruined.

To get the maximum service life from a bathroom door proper care needs to be given. glass cleaning agents, metal polish, tarnish removers, non-corrosive shower door sealants, and water stain removers which leaves residual protective coating to protect against future tarnish should be applied regularly in order to extract the maximum out of a bathroom door and also to keep it hygienic and pleasant for the eyes.

You may park two bikes on the same side or one on every side. The floor rack can hold all bicycle models including small-sized ones for kids. These are usually made of metal and are lightweight. No installation is also needed because of its free-standing design. For extra security, you may want to attach a chain and lock around the rack and bikes.

White walls give you enough room for innovations every time because this color goes well with all types of furnishings and floorings. It is important to note that that bamboo is not a wood — it’s a grass, so we cannot call it hardwood. However, it can last as long as the standard hardwoods we have around, so that’s probably why most people mistake it as such.

To make a flat, solid floor, the bamboo tubes are cut into strips. These are then these are boiled to strip the starch away. The boiled strips proceed to the drying and lamination process, and then milled to become strip floor boards. This is the same process that hardwoods like maple or oak go through. Finally, the strips are treated using a preservative to slow down decay.

There is something about bamboo floors that gives a room an ethnic and earthy feel. Because hardwoods like oak are rather dark and, thus, look too rich and heavy, using bamboo as your flooring makes your space appear lighter, airier, and less contrived.

But perhaps the best thing about bamboo floors is that they are easy to acquire and install. Bamboo floor strips are sold at all building materials stores. You don’t have to search far and wide to get your hands on them.
